ARC had something to prove against the only team to deny them a bonus point win so far this season, and both teams expected that the sun and dry weather would lead to a free flowing game. Unfortunately the first 15 minutes of the game saw poor handling and decision making. Both teams earned early penalties and took the chance for points. ARC then worked into a dangerous attacking position, won quick ball following a scrum and Sebastian Brom raced over for a try. ARC was starting to play more to their potential and worked up the field with improved handling. With the forwards starting to break the line, the backs took advantage with Sam Bean (2 tries) and Pablo Agui soon crossing for nice tries out wide.
A run of penalties led Groningen to possession in ARC territory. Some creative play from Groningen forced a mistake and ARC was awarded a yellow card. Impressively, while down to 14 men ARC scored another try to head into the break with a comfortable lead and the bonus point secured.
Half-time: 27 – 3
The second half again saw the backs working well on the outside of the defence, although continued penalties were slowing momentum. An early try to Craig Brent was nearly enough to make the coach smile, although Groningen were not giving up. A sustained period of pressure for Groningen resulted in a try for them. That seemed to be the required wake-up call for ARC who then ran in 3 more tries to Will Macdonald, Jasper Kombrink and another to Craig Brent with strong running and moving the ball into space. The introduction of substitutes and the team’s superior fitness was key in the final 20 minutes.
We now prepare for an important clash with Eemland away next weekend.
