"We nearly had them"
So the day came and we had to play a student team, on a Sunday early. First we watched two teams on the telly. One with a design team behind them full of colour blinds, they call themselves all blacks and the other team named after a rowdy rugby song something to with beasts and what to do with a wallaby. There was nothing new the same mistakes you will see at our games but those teams who can only play after a weeks rest didn't show the enthusiasm that goes with playing for ARC 3rd XV.
Squad leader Mal had made sure there was, again, a full squad and subs. This was going to be our day.
Warm up, practice scrums on the machine, a few line outs, some inspirational words by our captain and we were ready to face the students.
Now, with the return of AJ our pack weight had increased a bit and you could tell by the fear in the student eyes that they rather not play us. As usual the ARC 3rd XV need a bit of time to get in the game and there is nothing wrong with that, a shame though the students didn't.
But didn't the game against Delft not show that we can score tries and that statistically our points as well as our performances were on the up. With the score 5 – 12, a good try by Yorkie, we crossed the line again and ran straight to the posts. Only to be met by those damned students who accordingly by the ref held up the ball, bugger. Still no man overboard as the saying goes. Half time and we were sure that all that beer and late Saturday night would cost the students the game.
As it turns out students aren't students anymore. The only drink they had since Friday must have been the wine at morning mass. We tried different plays made subs but this student team, driven by fear for our forwards and therefore kept running from them and fast the were scored a couple more tries and well the rest is history.
The technical bit.
We need to stay closer together. With some gone for the showers and others to support the ARC Ladies our beer supply lacked a bit of consistency. As soon a full jug came close so did the team. Glasses were well held although some would only hold them with two fingers. Boys keep them well wrapped with your fingers we do not want spillage.
Next weekend we have no game.
Can I just say a big thank you to Mrs. Yorkie for letting Steven to come and play with us.
