AMSTELVEEN RC 1890 – plays in the First division in THE NETHERLANDS on route towards becoming the major force in Dutch Rugby in 2012 and thereafter. Throughout most of almost 50 year-old history we played in the country’s top division (EREKLASSE) at 15’s and 7’s, a few seasons ago we dropped to a lower division after reaching a boiling point, but we are now rebuilding strong teams for this season and the seasons to come.
A few seasons ago we received this honourable prize
Amstelveen RC 1890 Sports club of the year in Amstelveen
As one of the most international clubs in Holland, we welcome players from all the major rugby-playing countries, who perhaps are “doing Europe”, exploring Amsterdam or are looking for their former Dutch roots. Although an amateur club, our organisation is well catered for welcoming, receiving, and sometimes helping serious players in this process of sportive growth. We have doubled our size in 10 years and are hoping to build on our current situation as one of the largest club in the Netherlands with 3 senior teams, a ladies team, 2 veterans teams and a huge (120+) and currently very successful youth department.
Amstelveen RC 1890 is looking for:
As one of the biggest clubs in the Netherlands (with well over 300 members in all, 120 + playing senior members and 120 youth members in all age groups), we currently run 3 senior teams , a new ladies side, 2 veterans sides and youth teams in all age groups (6-18). We are planning eventually to start up an occasional Amstelveen RC 1890 Exiles side (a team made up of the many of foreigners playing at Amstelveen). ARC 1890 1 plays in the Dutch first division and ARC 1890 2 and ARC 1890 3 play in the 4th national division.
Our first team is a well-balanced side that at present houses 2 or 3 former Dutch national team players, as well as 3 to 4 top foreign players who raise the level of the club considerably. We hope that many Dutch players may also find their way (back) to our club, once they see we have sorted out our rugby and mean business after a long building period.
Players
However, we may soon again be recruiting various players to broaden our selection and beef-up this highly international side and we always welcome new players to complete this promising team for the future. All positions are naturally welcome at any level. We are not looking for professional rugby players but for good players and good clubmen who fit into our highly friendly although competitive club atmosphere and are willing to help us along.
Our mission:
Our club's mission for this current season is to go for a top 4 position in the first division, at the same time building a strong development reserve team and bring our Colts team (U-19) along next seeson. We will be once again separating a top sport section from the senior social side in our efforts. Our two Veterans teams will play social rugby as much as possible as well. For the coming years we want to push even further upwards, build up our strength further and provide the coaches, facilities (weight training, fitness, running as well as rugby) and opportunities for Dutch (we hope) and foreign players to raise the level of their own game and go back into the top division and when really ready go for the Dutch championship. A learning school as such for future Dutch national team players, for example, or a stepping stone for foreign players looking for the ‘game at its best' later on elsewhere.
Our special youth Academy is a good example here of our dedication!
Also we hope to get our new and greatly enthusiastic Ladies team further well established in the Dutch rugby scene!
Our technical committee, pitch and coaching staff
Our excellent pitches and (soon brand new) clubhouse rate among the best in the country and the coaching staff is impressive with 5 IRB Level 1/2/3 coaches in the staff. On top of this we are deploying trainer/players (from abroad) at a first team level as well.
Our technical committee consists of:
- First team and CLUB CAPTAIN and recent national team player, with a wide international playing experience Joost Puijpe
- Head Coach / player, Matthew Hallstead (responsible for First team) IRB level 2
- Tahi Percy, forwards trainer (ex Captain of NZ universities) and currently involved with national teams as well, who has been added to this coaching staff and is highly equipped to provide an expert coaching of the many players we expect this season.
- Diego Moll. Current second team coach, Former Dutch youth international and an experienced coach.
- Former Dutch youth international, former youth chairman and current Senior board member Jacques van der Meer
- Job Volker. Colts coach. Current and former national team Under 18 coach
- Erik Hengeveld (youth), former national team player and natri0nal team coach, with 30+ years of coaching experience up to the very highest level

Youth rugby (now 120+ member from 6-18)
We have a fast growing youth department in ages from 6-18 expertly trained by many top coaches or former top players, and coordinated by youth chairman Hans Gilsing. Former Dutch National team coach Erik Hengeveld will also be assisting at youth level once again this season This way we can provide a good 'rugby school' at all levels (including youth). Youth trainers will include many faces, and also include Erik van den Heuve, Gert-Jan Combee, Diego Moll (all (former Dutch Youth team), Robert van Trigt (Netherlands A), Ruud Hengeveld (Netherlands B), Gustavo Rota (Argentina), Nils Lauffer (former Natonal 7’s international), Leon Koenen (present Dutch 7’s and 15’s national team player) and guest trainers from the first team.
