Congratulations to our 1st VII for making the semi-final of the Amsterdam Sevens Shield last weekend. Admittedly, our opponents were more modest than in recent years, but we did win all three games on Saturday (including the cracker against our Italian friends from Chicken Milano). Following a celebration drink and a good night's sleep, we also won our poule on Sunday morning to mark the first time we have won five consecutive games at the Amsterdam 7s since our glory days as the top Dutch sevens team in the country, before stumbling in the semis on Sunday afternoon.
The Amstelveen squad included a solid base of regular first team players, who showed their considerable skills after a hard season ending in promotion to the Ereklasse next season - no mean feat! The team also included three 18-year-old Colts, high potentials fresh from their achievement last week in reaching the final of the National Colts 7s. It was also good to see so many familiar faces turning out for the club in the guise of the New NFC Wanderers, while other club members navigated their way to the tryline as part of the Tom Tom team. The Amstelveen Ladies also played their part this year on the Sunday afternoon, sweet-talking hundreds of euros out of the pockets of guests in the VIP hospitality tents as well as well-wishers all around the ground for the Foundation for the aftercare of handicapped rugby players. And it was great to see so many enthusiastic club supporters along the line, cheering our club onwards and upwards as we approach our 50th birthday!
